French ruling on marriage within week

France’s Constitutional Court has agreed to examine the issue of same-sex marriage and is expected to produce a verdict within a week.

Lawyers for a lesbian couple with children who are seeking the right to marry will ask the court to decide whet

her denying same-sex couples marriage is a violation of the right to marry and establish a family contained in the International Convention on the Rights of Man.

The case was passed to the Constitutional Court by France’s highest appeals court, which had previously ruled that same-sex marriage was an issue for lawmakers to decide.

Currently both same-sex couples and opposite-sex couples can enter into civil partnerships but same-sex couples may not marry or adopt.
