Game, set, match for Tennis Sydney

Earlier this month, Tennis Sydney held its annual Peter Deacon Spring Tournament, with more than 100 players competing for titles in 11 events.

For the first time, the tournament joined the already established Tennis Sydney Mardi Gras tournament on the international circuit.

Held from October 9 to 11 at the Illawarra Tennis Centre, tournament director Dean Matterson had his work cut out to schedule games for 108 players, the large number thanks to the growing interest in Tennis Sydney competitions.

The tournament ran smoothly though, with a number of Tennis Sydney competitors placing extremely well. In the C-Doubles final, Aussie Cameron Bedeau and his Spanish partner Francisco Olmo fought a tough three-setter against Aussies

Peter Burgess and Kevin Gardner to come out on top. In a similarly nail-biting all Australian B-Doubles final, Peter D and Bill Tran finally won out over Ryan Chan and Jamie Parker.

In the B-Singles final, Noah Jiyane powered to victory against Tuan Nguy and in the C-Singles final, Mario Queddeng defeated the in-form Peter Vellonio. The D-Singles final was won by Italian Riccardo Cristiani and the mixed doubles were won by George C and Jacqui Symonds. In a closely fought masters doubles event, Ben Alfred and Craig Hunt defeated Ian Carthew and Hayden Frawley.

Elsewhere, Jarrod Green beat fellow Aussie Mark Jones in an entertaining A-Singles final and then went onto to win an extremely tough A-Doubles final with his partner Paul Kwon.

In the Open Singles final, Russell Hall beat the reigning Open Singles Mardi Gras champion Mikey Feeney, then went on to win one of the outstanding matches of the day with his doubles partner Hayden Frawley in an all Australian-contested Open Doubles final.

New players are always welcome at Tennis Sydney. Social tennis games are held each Sunday afternoon from 12-5pm at Parklands Tennis Club.
