Gay MP gets Cabinet position

Newly sworn in South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has announced a major Cabinet restructure, including a promotion for gay Labor MP Ian Hunter.

After being sworn in today as the state’s 45th leader at Government House, Weatherill announced Hunter would be elevated to a Cabinet position covering the communities, social inclusion, disabilities, youth and volunteers portfolios.

Weatherill congratulated Hunter during the announcement, saying he brought a wide range of skills and experience to the Cabinet.

The new premier has previously spoken out in favour of marriage equality.

When questioned by reporters when Labor Education Minister, he said he supported the removal of discrimination against same-sex couples in the Marriage Act.

“I’ve always been a supporter of same-sex couple marriage,” he said.

Earlier this month, outgoing premier Mike Rann and South Australian Liberal Party leader Isobel Redmond also declared support for marriage equality.
