Gender review at ABS

Transgender advocates have welcomed a review from the Australian Bureau of Statistics on how it collects sex and gender data which could improve current research. The ABS is seeking community input about its current ‘sex standard’ which determines how its surveys and research defines the sexes. The review is focusing on whether the ABS needs to define sex different from gender which it currently does not do.

The need to collect information about people who do not fall within the intersex or indeterminate categories is also being reviewed.

Trans Health Australia founder Melody Moore encouraged community members to speak up and said there was no research available about the population size of diverse gender and sex communities in Australia. “I think being able to identify the group [size], it will give us a better idea of what support services may be needed,” Moore said.

The consultation ends on February 28 2013.
