TRANS MARRIAGE BAN

USA: A law proposed by Texan Republicans would bar transgender people from being recognised in their chosen gender for the purpose of marriage — meaning only those who were attracted to people who were the opposite of their birth gender would be allowed to get married. The law would have the bizarre effect of allowing same-sex transgender marriages but not heterosexual ones.

PRINCE TO ACT

INDIA: India’s gay prince, Manvendra Singh Gohil, will star in an autobiographical film being made by his great-uncle, Sureshwar Singhji Gohil, a US-based fimmaker. The movie, to be called I Too Have a Dream, will be filmed at Rajwant Palace in Rajpipla and other locations where Prince Manvendra spent important parts of his life.

ACTIVISTS CLAIM VICTORY

RUSSIA: Russian GLBT activists are claiming victory after Moscow officials authorised what should be the city’s first legal pride march. Organisers say that up to 500 people will be allowed to march on May 28, with a similar event to take place in St Petersburg on May 1. Previously Moscow Pride had been held illegally five times while St Petersburg held its first legal pride event last year.

DON’T SAY GAY

USA: The Tennessee Senate has passed a law that would outlaw any discussion of homosexuality or gay and lesbian people by teachers in front of schoolchildren from kindergarten to year eight. The bill’s author, Senator Stacey Campfield, has claimed the bill is not biased as it would in practice ban both positive and negative discussion of homosexuality.
