Going bush to help the poor

The Bush Lemons are in training to take on a 100km walk in 48 hours in a bid to raise money and awareness for Oxfam, a charity organisation which looks to help people in the developing world.
Five members from the Blue Mountains-based lesbian bushwalking club will be taking part in the annual Trailwalker Challenge in August. It will mark the third time the Bush Lemons have taken part in the worldwide event.
Sharon Carter, Jocelyn Williams, Carol Moran, Angela Donaghey and Jo Clark will all attempt to walk from Brooklyn on the Central Coast to Mosman, along the Great North Walk, in just two days. Through this mighty effort they hope to raise more than $5,000 to contribute to Oxfam.
We have been putting lots of time and effort into training, walking during weeknights, and taking full day and weekend walks along the trail itself, Williams said.
The training is quite challenging but we have a lot of fun along the way and luckily all enjoy the walking.
It is very much a team event as you walk together and it’s all about all of you finishing the walk together. The Bush Lemons Club are right behind us and have been donating money and encouraging us. We also have a wonderful support team which will make all the difference at the checkpoints.
Over the years the Bush Lemons have raised $17,000 for Oxfam and are looking set to make another large contribution, with the girls already managing to raise a considerable amount through a round of garage sales.
There will also be a fundraising dinner on August 23 in Katoomba, which will feature silent auctions and raffles in another bid to raise money.

  1. Prey tell how did ‘lemon’ become a synonym for lesbian? I always thought anything that is a lemon is a dud.
