HIV convenience testing trial

HIV convenience testing trial

Gay and bisexual men in southwest Queensland now have access to private or mail-order mouth swab screening for HIV.

The ethically approved community-based research is being conducted with new oral swab technology used to detect HIV. Interested participants can arrange for a kit to be mailed to them or can link up with one of the researchers involved.

The screen for HIV is private and confidential but it’s not anonymous — those taking part will need to be contactable for results.

HIV notifications in southwest Queensland have risen recently and research suggests one in five men with HIV don’t know they are infected. Participation in the research is being pitched particularly to those men who haven’t had an HIV test in the last six months.
