RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Violet Chachki has become the first drag queen ever to land a major lingerie campaign.

Chachki is the face of a pinup-inspired new range for UK lingerie brand Playful Promises, Harper’s Bazaar has reported.

“Bettie Page has been a big inspiration for my drag character for a long time, so it’s kind of full circle for me,” said Chachki.

“I reference her a lot in my work so it was kind of the perfect pairing for me and a dream job.”

Chachki is thrilled to be representing drag queens in an industry usually dominated by cis women.

“It’s so gratifying to be accepted into a world that I never thought a drag queen would be accepted into,” she said.

“There’s so many different identities out there and I think they all deserve some visibility. Showing variety in representation in casting is super important, it gives minorities a platform and I think it definitely creates a safe space for conversation and progress.”

Chachki said the fashion and media industries have a major role to play in boosting the visibility of gender-diverse people.

“It’s about taking risks,” she said.

“I mean, casting gender non-conforming people in campaigns and editorials and on covers of magazines is a risk for any business because there’s going to be controversy, but I think they need to take the risk and believe they’re moving in the right direction.”
