Straight people hijacked national Coming Out Day and LGBTI people aren’t happy

Wednesday was National Coming Out Day, and as LGBTI people around the world used the hashtags #comingoutday and #nationalcomingoutday to share their identities, a handful of straight people unsurprisingly hijacked it.
Many people posted joke ‘coming out’ tweets announcing their straight identities.
Others used the hashtag to ‘come out’ as religious or conservative.
The usual cries of exclusion appeared, with some calling for a special day for straight people, echoing the calls earlier in the year for a straight pride month.
“Why do gays and stuff get a month and day about them, but all of us straight people don’t? What makes gays so special?” tweeted one person.
“I’m conservative, straight, female, I love America [and] our great military!” posted another.
“I am coming out as a white Christian heterosexual male. Please stop the persecution,” wrote one person in what could be a joke.
Some social media users have asked straight cis people to remember that coming out can be fraught for LGBTI folks, and it’s not to be made fun of.
“Coming out as straight isn’t funny. Coming out is a very fragile process for most people, please be mindful,” one user wrote.
“Roses are red, violets are blue, if you’re straight settle down, this day ain’t for you,” another wrote.
Now that Coming Out Day is over for another year, most straight cis people will stop claiming to be oppressed, until the next Pride Month.

Peter Dutton’s purpose in saying the Yes vote is winning is to make the millions of Yes voters who have not returned their forms think that their vote is not necessary. This is what was done with great effect in the Trump campaign.
