Katter joins marriage protest

Carl Katter, the half brother of Queensland MP Bob Katter, will speak at a protest outside the Park Hyatt hotel in Melbourne tomorrow where Prime Minister Julia Gillard will be attending a lunch.

Last month Carl Katter accused his MP sibling of “perpetuating hate” for publicly ridiculing same-sex marriage.

Carl Katter said there are no half measures when it came to marriage equality.

“I am the first to acknowledge the hard work the Labor Party has done in regards to human rights, but you can’t progress half way,” Katter said.

“We either have equality or we don’t.”

Equal Love Victoria convener Ali Hogg urged marriage equality supporters to join the protest.

“The majority of Australians support marriage equality and it’s about time the [Australian Labor Party] ALP took a stand on this issue and got rid of discrimination,” she said.

“It’s so fantastic that Carl Katter is speaking at the rally. I think he has proven to be an inspiration to many, having the bravery to come out publicly in the face of a conservative brother.”

Equal Love protesters will join forces with the Refugee Action Collective tomorrow to protest against Gillard’s continued opposition to same-sex marriage and the Government’s treatment of refugees.

The protest is scheduled for 11.30am.

Equal Love protesters will head to Sydney later this year to join a mass rally outside the ALP National Conference on December 3.
