Lee Kwan Yew ‘would accept gay grandkids’

Lee Kwan Yew, the prime minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990, has told journalists he would accept having a gay or lesbian grandchild.

Yew said it was not an issue as homosexuality was genetic, and compared the situation to his favourite grandchild who is an albino — a condition that is also genetic.

Yew has been urging tolerance for homosexuals since 2007 but the Government, in which he was a senior minister from 1990 to 2004, has failed to repeal Singapore’s colonial-era sodomy laws.

The rarely used Section 377A of the Singaporean Penal Code punishes homosexuality with sentences of up to two years.
