Let’s Go – David Campbell

For a straight man, cabaret crooner David Campbell’s never been afraid to camp it up — you don’t release an album of show tunes without at least a bit of a nod to your flamboyant side. He may have outdone himself with this latest album, though — Let’s Go sees Campbell perform the (already quite gay) songs of the early ’80s British pop scene, reinterpreted big band-style. Soft Cell’s Tainted Love, Human League’s Don’t You Want Me, Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ Come On Eileen — they’re all here, all delivered in jaunty, big band style. The interpretations may grate for some, but props to Campbell for putting a little thought and imagination into the project as opposed to churning out a straight (no pun intended) covers album. And further props to Campbell for those divine blue suede slip-on shoes he’s rocking on the album’s back cover — send a pair our way please, Davey!
