Camp Out organisers launch crowd sourcing campaign

CAMP Out has launched its 2015 fundraising campaign to make their annual camp for LGBTI youth a reality.

The Sydney-based initiative is hoping to run its fifth consecutive camp this year.

For young people, the challenges of identifying as LGBTI — as well as queer or asexual — is often a difficult and confusing period.

The camp provides young people aged between 13 and 17 the opportunity to connect and share their experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

Many of the young people who attend the camp come from rural or suburban areas, where services catering to their needs can be scarce.

Along with typical camp activities like movie nights, bonfires, and games and sports, the campers also participate in workshops and discussions about identity and sexual orientation, homophobia and transphobia, and dealing with coming out to family and friends.

“Camp Out is like home. A place you can feel safe, respected and cared for,” a testimonial from a previous camper reads on the Pozible fundraising page.

The event is supported entirely by grants and community donation, and at the time of print, it had raised around $2000 of its $10,000 goal.

The organisation receives support from Twenty10, ACON, the Inner City Legal Centre, and it is organised and staffed entirely by volunteers.

The not-for-profit initiative is also accepting donations of food, sporting equipment, art supplies, and makeup and costumes.

Visit Camp Out’s Pozible page to pledge, and the website and Facebook for more information.
