Mardi Gras goes bush

Sydney wasn’t the only place in the state to get into the spirit of Mardi Gras earlier this month, with the remote western NSW town of Bourke throwing its first gay pride event.

Organised by staff from the Bourke Health Service in conjunction with volunteers and organisers, the ‘Out in the Outback’ festival aimed to raise awareness of LGBTI people in remote and rural communities. Timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Mardi Gras, Out in the Outback featured circus performers, the music of ABBA and Kylie Minogue and a rainbow cake.

Bourke Health Services manager Dr Sally Torr said the support for the event marked how times had changed over the past 35 years.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Bourke to demonstrate tolerance and social inclusion,” Torr said.

Organisers said they intended the festival to become an annual event alongside Mardi Gras.
