Churches and gay Christians show Mardi Gras support

THE Metropolitan Community Church will hold its annual blessing of the Mardi Gras festival this weekend.

Taking place on Sunday evening, the service at the Petersham-based church will focus on the plight of oppressed peoples overseas as well as asylum seekers.

“This blessing of Mardi Gras, we’ll be offering up a special prayer for the brave MCC Christians who face death threats, threats of violence and intimidation everyday while standing up for LGBTI rights. We are calling for a separation of church and hate in Russia because we believe God’s love is bigger than homophobia,” Reverend Greg Smith said.

Meanwhile, LGBTI Christian advocacy group Freedom2b will hold its first regular chapter meeting of the year on Friday, February 7 at Surry Hills. Dr John Wallace will be the special guest speaker.
