Go behind the sequins

Legendary Mardi Gras parade costume-maker Ron Muncaster will join a panel of designers at Customs House Library on February 22 to give creative tips and provide a behind-the-sequins look at the event in its 34th year.

Frock Me: Mardi Gras Parade Costumes is part of the Library Up Late: Saucy Sydney series in February and March, which includes readings, performances, storytelling and panel discussions.

Muncaster, whose costumes are in the Powerhouse Museum and the National Museum of Australia, encouraged designers to unleash their creativity at this year’s parade.

“I get ideas from materials, walking through hardware shops and scrap-metal places,” he said. “I see something that I think I can use and it evolves from that.”

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City of Sydney was a long-time supporter of Mardi Gras.

“Mardi Gras is one of our most valued cultural events and is recognised as such in the City’s Major Festivals funding,” Moore said.

Former Ready Steady Cook host Peter Everett will host the panel discussion. Muncaster will be joined by Mardi Gras’ 2011 Best Costume Design winner Drew Lambert, award-winning artist and float designer Philippa Playford, and photographer C Moore Hardy.
