Greenwich calls for action on police

Alex Greenwich

Sydney state MP Alex Greenwich has called for urgent action to repair relations between the LGBTI community and police following revelations that two high-profile incidents after this year’s Mardi Gras involved the same police officer.

“Both cases are still before the courts and it is important that they continue to expose the facts of what happened. The community will want appropriate action to be taken,” Greenwich said in a statement released this morning.

Greenwich again called on the state government to establish an independent body to investigate allegations of police misconduct, which are currently handled internally.

“The government needs to seriously consider the community’s call for an independent oversight body to investigate such matters. I will work with all those involved to ensure the approach to policing at Mardi Gras and Police relations with the LGBTI community continues to improve.”

Greenwich also called for a community forum bringing together LGBTI community members and representatives of NSW Police, although it is not clear how the forum will be substantially different from a similar one in March, where almost 300 people gathered to voice their concerns about a heavy-handed police presence at major LGBTI events.

  1. Huh? The same police officer? Where did that information come from Alex?

I don’t condone violence of any kind, but I was at the parade that night, and all of the police I saw there, were enjoying the atmosphere, and were acting professional. The police officer must have been a magician to move from one end of Oxford Street to the other end in that crowd that night, I know I couldn’t get inside the Brighton Hotel to use the toilet when I needed to and besides I thought that the cops had to stay in the one area all night?

I know I am not the only person who has had a gutful of people whipping up anti police sentiment because a police officer took action against a young man who had assaulted another person watching the parade, THEN spat at the police officer and if I remember correctly, assaulted the police officer, with the whole incident captured on camera…what would you do if you were confronted with the same scenario? what would you want the police to do if it was your other half or your parents being assaulted in the same manner at a different location?

Some of you people who are against the police need to have a think about what you find abhorrent and why, and you people who identify as our community leaders, such as Alex Greenwich, have a responsibility to lead our community truthfully and not go on a witch hunt because it appeals to the people who you represent.

  2. I too have made a complaint about police only to have it “investigated” by his fellow police from the same station.
I said how can you be impartial if you are from the same police station.
He said we all know each other and go out drinking together.
I guess it was “investigated” at the pub one night.

  3. Well done Alex – this is good news. After my partner was repeatedly assaulted by 2 Rose Bay Police officers – we complained via the NSW police web site. After a month of silence they assigned a Rose Bay inspector who promised us a fair investigation – but at the same time refused us access to a GLO (I have the emails to prove this) and incredibly, at the same time, this same inspector insisted on pursuing an illegal arrest of me that was quickly thrown out of court – it was made clear to us that continuing with our complaint against his buddies in Rose Bay meant pressing ahead with charges they fully knew were bogus – all at tax payers expense.

I asked ‘how can Rose Bay Police investigate Rose Bay police?’ And of course they can’t, and they didn’t. All they did was lie, spin and deflect clear evidence to suit their own purposes. NSW Police cannot investigate NSW Police, and the Ombudsmans Office, under resourced as they are, did nothing but package up the police lies and spin into an error ridden report that was of no value to anyone.

    • The sham of nsw police investigating nsw police I think is over, see no evil, hear no evil, therefore no evil is bullshit – nsw police are (not all but most) are evil corrupt bullshit liars – no other way to put it, straight out bullshit liars who work the system on a daily basis to fuck people over – gay or straight
