Porter dead at 54

The prominent lesbian poet Dorothy Porter has died from complications due to cancer at the age of 54. Porter was best known for The Monkey’s Mask, a thriller written in verse, which won The Age Poetry Book of the Year in 1994 and went on to win other national and international accolades. A film version was later released. Porter’s most recent publication was El Dorado, her fifth verse novel. It was shortlisted for various prizes.

Yesterday Porter’s agent Jenny Darling paid tribute to her spirit. Dorothy was the most passionate of people who gave her all to everything she engaged with. We cannot imagine the world without her.
Porter was born in Sydney but lived in Melbourne since 1993.
She is survived by her partner of many years, Andrea Goldsmith.

  1. May i appeal to have some of this poet’s work published as a S.S.O feature and fitting tribute?
