Throwback: A highlight in NSW’s decriminalisation of homosexuality campaign

WITH the Australian Homosexual Histories Conference beginning in Sydney tomorrow, the Star Observer thought it would be timely to share this article found in the October 7, 1983 edition.

It shows the prominent activist, the late Lex Watson, alongside Pride History Group’s Robert French, signing a declaration that they have committed crimes in homosexual acts with other men. (scroll down to view article in full)

The declarations were a ploy to see if police would arrest them, but a few months later, NSW became the fourth state to decriminalise homosexuality.

This year marks 30 years since NSW achieved this, and the conference – which is on tomorrow and Saturday – will highlight this anniversary, as well as pay special tribute to Lex Watson, who died earlier this year.

Pride History Group’s Homosexual Histories Conference 2014, supported by the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives and the Australian Centre for Public History, will be held at UTS on November 28-29. For details and bookings, visit: www.pridehistorygroup.org.au
