Wear It Purple officially recognised in NSW Parliament

WEAR It Purple organisers have expressed gratitude in NSW Parliament’s official support of their annual event after a motion was unanimously passed this week.

Wear It Purple was held on August 29 this year, the fifth event since its inception in 2010.

The motion, which was tabled by upper house Labor MP Penny Sharpe, congratulated the young organisers who have made Wear It Purple a success and acknowledged the work they do for LGBTI youth.

“Wear It Purple Day is a grassroots campaign organised by young people for young people,” Sharpe’s motion read.

“[It] is a student-run not-for-profit organisation that exists to support young people who identify as sexuality and or gender diverse , queer or rainbow.

“[It] has a simple message to young people in our communities that they have the right to be proud of who they are… [and] seeks to raise awareness about the issues faced by these young people and the need to eradicate bullying based on sexuality and gender diversity.”

2014 was Wear It Purple’s biggest year yet, with 250 registered events, including 130 events held at schools, TAFEs and universities across Australia.

“We were thrilled that this motion was passed through NSW Parliament,” Wear It Purple’s Chloe Lawrence-Hartcher said.

“It’s fantastic to see that hard work that all young people at Wear it Purple put in to make the day happen, has been recognised at such a high level.

“We’re really proud of the team of 14-24 year olds who made this year happen and can’t wait to see how it grows for next year.”
