Women said something … now women will film something

WOMEN will be asked to use their voices in a newly-launched free film competition that has come out of the successful women’s panel discussion event Women Say Something.

Women Film Something was launched last month during the 10th Women Say Something event The Power of Music by founder and artistic director Steph Sands.

Teaming up with filmmaker Epiphany Morgan, Sands said the competition is calling on women everywhere to consider the theme, Use Your Voice, to a create a film relevant to women and female lives.

“Entry is free, so if you have something to say you are halfway there,” she said.

“You don’t need a big budget or excellent cinematography skills to have a great idea, or make a great film – or to use your voice.”

The films will be judged by industry professionals, with three finalists to be screened at the Women Say Something Mardi Gras 2014 event at ydney Town Hall on February 28, during which the audience will decide the overall inaugural winner.

Films can be personal, historical, factual, fictional, funny or serious.

As well as encapsulating the theme ‘Use Your Voice’, films will be assessed according to the Bechdel Test, where it must include at least two women having a conversation about something other than a man.

The overwhelming majority of Hollywood films have traditionally failed the grading while in November four independent Swedish cinemas commenced rating films on whether they pass the Bechdel Test before publicly promoting the results to audiences.

Prizes on offer for the Women Film Something competition will be announced shortly. Entries for films close January 31.
