Noel Tovey recognised in Australia Day honours

NOEL Tovey was made a Member of the Order of Australia over the weekend for his significant service to the performing arts, Indigenous performers, and as an LGBTI advocate.

Tovey, who is the author of autobiography Little Black Bastard and co-founder of the London Theatre for Children, is also a patron for Val’s Cafe, a Melbourne-based organisation that advocates for the wellbeing of older LGBTI Australians.

He also played a role in the campaign for the expungement of historical convictions of consensual gay sex in Victoria, which was passed in October.

Tovey also established the Noel Tovey Scholarship Fund in 2001 and the Noel Tovey Award for Achievement in 2006 to help young Australians have access to a performing arts education.
