Plibersek writes to Coalition MPs for marriage equality co-sponsor

DEPUTY Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek has sent a letter to all Coalition MPs seeking a co-sponsor for her marriage equality bill and to lobby the party to allow a conscience vote on the issue.

Last week Plibersek received the approval of the Labor caucus for the bill, and is looking to introduce it early this year. While the Deputy Opposition Leader is seeking a Government MP to co-sponsor the bill, failing that she is reportedly willing to accept an opposition co-sponsor.

Quoted in The Australian newspaper, the letter explains Plibersek’s bill would alter references to “a man and a woman” and “a husband and a wife”, replacing them with “two people”. The bill would also allow for legal recognition in Australia of same-sex marriages performed overseas.

Plibersek highlighted that the bill would allow churches to make their own decisions about whether to marry same-sex couples.

She asked MPs to encourage the Prime Minister to allow a conscience vote on marriage equality, and said Tony Abbott should confirm there wouldn’t be any “consequences” for Coalition MPs not voting with his position against marriage equality.

  1. You can wait years in Oz or dart. New Zealand is a jump for equality. Easier then a great big Toyota feeling jump. You need two witnesses, a celebrant or clergy member, and a wait of three days for your paperwork. Worried about who cannot attend? Have a reception in Australia, and many celebrants will offer to come here, so you can repeat your words “I do”. Or finally just have a great big party!

It is great some politicians get it, but we are yet to see the leaders march in Mardi Gras. Bill Shorten was chosen by the unions, and is not offering a binding vote, he was not chosen by the majority of party members, and Tony Abbott was chosen by 29% of his party. There will be no binding vote from him either.

Marriage fondly, is about you and your beloved, your community. People will treat you as married. I married after 13 years together and had a terrific time in New Zealand. Bill and Tony Are not people involed in my personal life, and who I marry is none of their business.

Empower yourself! Remember some pollies want to be seen as controlling you, and making decisions about your life. They want to put on a show, that they own your decisions and marriage. But it is just a show, a fake.
