Pratt’s fate still unclear after WA Senate re-election

THE fate of Labor Senator Louise Pratt is still in doubt following the re-run Western Australian Senate election on Saturday.

Pratt is a member of the LGBTI community and an outspoken ally of LGBTI Australians. Her partner Aram Hosie is a trans* man and activist working in Western Australia’s LGBTI community.

While the outcomes of five of the six available Senate seats have been determined, there is a tight race for the sixth seat between Pratt and the Coalition’s Linda Reynolds.

The Coalition have already gained two Senate seats in the election, filled by David Johnston and Michaela Cash, while the Green’s Scott Ludlam has one and Palmer United Party’s Zhenya Wang has another.

One seat has gone to the candidate who bumped Pratt off the top spot on Labor’s ticket, Joe Bullock — who made headlines for disparaging Pratt’s sexuality and her relationship with Hosie during the Senate campaign.

  1. The SDA Union has demonstrated why Labor cannot deliver equality. It makes Labor into a good hater. Bill Shorten should be sacked, as he is out of control in warlord mode, keeping his faction mate Bullock in power, at the expense of the reputation of Labor. His reform is just putting lipstick onto a bulldog, it is a little destraction. The SDA Union is a shocker that makes Tony Abbott look like a lefty from way back.

If the party has no standards for those it promotes, other then faction loyalty, then Labor is to become a fringe minority. This has happened in WA. The election of Joe Bullock is the start of the decent down the hill. Anthony Green pointed out, that it was an unusually strong vote for Pratt, given she was demoted to number two. It would seem many who bothered to vote Labor, are greatly troubled by the faction warlords and not impressed at the way they operate. Now it would seem, Bill Shorten has promoted GLBTI hate, as an important senate value. I can see why so many are turning to the Greens, given the strong hate Labor is promoting, at the expense of quality people like Pratt. Labor, is a broken party.

  2. Joe bullock was preselected by the wa branch and the voice unions, I know there are some anger from you but it has nothing to do with bill shorten, I suppose he could put pressure on him but the media would say there is dysfunction in the party so bill is damned if does something and damned if doesn’t yes I think bullock is a hole and old but he did some good things with wages in his union, there are bad people in th union and they need to be swept out which I’m sure they would, the union has kept this beautiful country of ours strong with proper wages penalties and safety at work which I’m sure you are pleased with and by the way fair fax media is a joke

    • Fairfax reports Bill Shorten was warned about Bullock, but dug his heels in, to support him. If it is not acceptable to support racist candidates, then why support homophobes? Why help a hater, and give them a senate spot, to further expand their power? Surely Bill Shorten has committed a moral hate crime. Surley Labor is broken, a bloody mess, when they put up candidates, that hate us, and seek to destroy our way of life? If unions produce this misery, this hate, this mess, then clearly the preselection process is corrupt and broken, and by definition, so is Labor.

  3. Your a idiot dave it’s not bill shorten fault it’s the wa labor that put him up nothing to do with bill, I do think labor should stop bashing the unions it is the unions that got labor in government it’s like the liberals with big business, labor get back to your good old roots protecting the poor and workers.

    • What are you suggesting, Labor actually needs GLBTI hating unions, or it cannot survive? I have almost been killed by a homophobe out the front of my house, I do not need Labor cheering in the senate. It is a broken party when they promote homophobic candidates, without a vote from members. Certainly the electorate thought so. At least the Greens showed the heart Labor once had. Someone had to step up, given the lack of leadership Union machine Bill shorten demonstrated.

  4. The Greens were terrific! Labor was Mobster Town. Seriously, how can Bill Shorten, ever, be taken seriously? Bullock demolished Pratt’s character, and that of her partner, throffing at her sexuality to a bunch of Bible thumpers. His bitter tongue had lots of spite, he even said he votes Liberal, was a big supporter of Tony Abbott, and of course, would leave the Labor Party if ever he was forced to vote for equality. This is how Mobster Town works, a phone call was made, and Bullock was number one on the senate spot. No questoins, no interviews, not members having say. The Labor Party is not a democracy, it is Mobster Town. What a shocker Bill Shorten turned out to be, just another Union man pushing the Mobster code of conduct. Bugger those on booths, ordinary members, who dared to care for Australia.

  5. The prat seems to have got a seat – seems he’s the wrong one though – fair bit of bull involved. Are bullocks castrated male bulls? Not being a country person I was just wondering.
