Brisbane’s Story Bridge to mark IDAHOT every year
IN another first for the city, Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge will be lit in rainbow colours to commemorate International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia every year for the foreseeable future.
Brisbane Council today announced that as a part of its ongoing commitment to honouring its LGBTI community, it has arranged for rainbow lighting on the city’s famous bridge every IDAHOT (May 17) for years to come.
“Council has arranged a standing booking for the 17th May, not only this year but also in coming years, to light the Story Bridge in rainbow colours to recognise the IDAHOT,” Field Services Committee chairman Cr David McLachlan told the Star Observer.
Confirming rumours circulating late last week, Cr McLachlan said that the move was made in line with council’s desire to celebrate the diversity of Brisbane and show respect.
“The introduction of LED lights on the Story Bridge has made it possible to mark significant events and council looks forward to continuing its strong support of the LGBTIQ community by raising awareness about this important date,” he said.
“The Story Bridge is one of our iconic landmarks, attracting thousands of cars each day and many more individuals observing its lights at night. Lighting the Story Bridge for the IDAHOT will raise awareness and work toward putting an end to discrimination in our community.”
The announcement comes on the back of recent news that Brisbane’s City Hall will for the first time host the 53rd Queens Birthday Ball, with council providing part funding for the night that is touted by organisers as one of the world’s longest-running LGBTI events.
