THE pink-sequinned “B” in the now-famous Brisbane G20 sign along the South Bank promenade will now remain as a new landmark for the city.

Queensland Arts Minister Ian Walker announced that the current sign would stay until February, when a permanent replacement would installed.

Brisbane Pride Festival were engaged in the overall creation of the sign, with their input seen in the design of the first letter, which became a symbol of tolerance and diversity.

Each letter was reportedly designated to different cultural and ethnic groups from across the state in an effort to display Queensland’s diversity as a part of the summit’s cultural celebrations last weekend.

“The Brisbane sign was one of the most popular elements of the G20 cultural celebrations, with an estimated 25,000 people visiting and taking photos,” Walker said.

“It was constructed by eight branches of the Queensland Men’s Shed Association and decorated by different community groups, but it wasn’t built to last forever.

“So, in conjunction with council, we will replace this sign with a new version that families can visit for years to come.”

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the permanent Brisbane sign would be a colourful welcome to the South Bank Parklands for both residents and visitors to the city.
