Liberal candidate Aaron Lane resigns over homophobic tweets

Aaron Lane has resigned as the Liberal Party’s upper house candidate for the Western Victoria Region following revelations about a series of homophobic social media posts.

Lane withdrew his candidacy prior to a meeting of the Liberal Party’s Administrative Committee on Friday afternoon.

The news comes just hours after Premier Denis Napthine called for Lane to step down, in the face of widespread criticism over a series of tweets written by Lane in which he used the word “faggot”.

The Liberal Party condemned Lane’s comments in a brief statement.

“The Liberal Party acknowledges that the comments made by Mr Lane on social media are hurtful to many people and are entirely unacceptable,” the statement read.

“While Mr Lane has unreservedly apologised for his comments, the Party believes it is important to send a strong message to the community that this behaviour will not be tolerated.”

  1. Why the hell would anyone vote for the “Liberal” Party, let alone gay people??? They are a bunch of tea party wannabe’s with hateful, bigoted views. I can t wait to see them wiped out at the next election.

    • The Liberal Party is going to be annihilated in all future state and federal elections according to the opinion polls. That is because they are not what they were professing to be. I suspect their demise will be much sooner and swifter than the legislation in favour of gay marriage in Australia. Tony Abbot’s recent “be prepared to send in the troops” stunt is the only thing that has lifted him slightly in the polls, which is unfortunate.
