Love (and condoms) are in the air

Today is the international day of romance but safe-sex advocates had just one message for Melburnians today: if it’s not on, it’s not on.

Valentine’s Day shares February 14 with International Condom Day and YEAH (Youth Empowerment Against HIV/AIDS) volunteers said it was no coincidence.

Volunteers converged in front of Melbourne’s State Library at lunch time today with a sexual health ‘flashmob’ and handed out condoms and spoke to pedestrians about sexual health.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) sponsored the event which was part of an international campaign with Condom Day flashmobs held in cities across the globe.

“Sexual health is an international issue and we’re thrilled to see community organisations all over the world, taking up our challenge and hitting the streets on International Condom Day to celebrate safe sex and healthy relationships,” AHF events producer Trish Moran said.

YEAH CEO Alischa Ross says Valentine’s Day and International Condom Day were the perfect partners.

“For many, Valentines Day isn’t just about sending someone you fancy a romantic card or receiving red roses, it’s about picking up. We think it’s important to link messages about healthy relationships, love and safe sex,” Ross said.
