Pinkalicious exemption granted
Pinkalicious organisers have been successful in their application for a women’s only event with a VCAT exemption granted this morning.
Promoters applied to VCAT in May for an exemption from state equal opportunity laws to allow them to turn biological men away from the event.
Pinkalicious promoter, Julie Mackenzie said it was a -œhistoricday for Melbourne’s lesbian community as the first enforced female-only event.
-œThere are currently three venues in Melbourne that are exclusively gay male. In applying for the VCAT exemption, Pinkalicious was responding to a significant community need for female-only events.
MacKenzie said lesbians now have a place they can feel comfortable and won’t be subjected to judgement about their sexuality or receive unwanted male attention.
Pinkalicious will be following the lead of The Peel and The Laird Hotel with a policy allowing them to exclude patrons of the opposite sex.
The next Pinkalicious will be held on August 15.

I just went to your website where you put in BIG letters that you’re a special women only event designed to protect the girls from the unwanted attention of me – and then you put in TINY letters that you will have men working at the event. What is the difference between these men and potential patrons? Its not tough to find female staff. You’re hypocrites as far as I’m concerned and simply looking for media hype. I wont be coming.
As a gay guy, who has always had heaps of fun at women/lesbian events, and has proudly worn the title of lemon-aid, dyke hag etc etc, Im sad that I won’t be able to come, BUT I am extremely happy that women can now enjoy a space of their own just like us boys with the Liard and Sircuit. Well done to Julie and the Pinkalicious team, I know you all put all your heart and dancing power into your events! Cheers Pup

It is fantastic that women have been awarded a ‘no boys allowed’ space, however the ‘biological female’ term bothers me. One hopes our transgendered sisters and effeminate biological males will not be further marginalised under this new exemption.
