Seminar to discuss faith and sexuality

Seminar to discuss faith and sexuality

Homosexuality and the church is a challenging topic at best, but former Assemblies of God preacher Anthony Venn-Brown will tackle the issue head on in a forum this weekend.
The day-long seminar, Homosexuality + Christianity + The Church -” The Conflicts Resolved, will wrestle with the conflicts GLBT Christians face.
Venn-Brown, who was married and went through ex-gay programs, came out the other side to establish Freedom 2 b[e], a network for GLBT Christians.
Freedom 2 b[e] was founded in 2004 after Venn-Brown released his autobiography, A Life of Unlearning, which he said caused a flood of emails and prompted him to establish the network to give gay Christians a voice.
-œUp until this point there was no point of contact for the many thousands of people who were isolated, he said.
Freedom 2 b[e] is an online network for GLBT people from Pentecostal and evangelical backgrounds rather than a specific Christian organisation.
Venn-Brown told Southern Star the seminar is about creating greater awareness of Freedom 2 b[e] and helping people from Christian backgrounds resolve some of their issues of faith and sexuality.
-œPeople find seminars like this empowering because it answers all their questions, he said.
Venn-Brown said he believes, although movement is slow, there is an increasing acceptance of GLBT people in Christianity.

-œThe old school thinking is a dying breed. Eventually everyone will realise a person’s morality is not determined by their sexual orientation -œThere was a time when the majority of society believed that to have coloured skin meant you were inferior. Today the USA has an African American president. Change is slow but it’s change nonetheless.

info: The seminar is Saturday, August 22 at the Victorian AIDS Council, South Yarra. Tickets are $50, $30 concession. For more information email [email protected]
