Would you invite Tony Abbott to your (gay) wedding?
AUSTRALIAN same-sex couples cannot legally marry in their home country yet, but that doesn’t mean they are not already planning for their big day in anticipation of the law change.
Law firm Maurice Blackburn has designed a website called InviteTony.com that encourages same-sex couples to register a date for their wedding and then invite Prime Minister Tony Abbott to save the date.
[showads ad=MREC]The aim of the site is to lobby the PM to grant his MPs a conscience vote on marriage equality.
The website states: “We already have the will of the people. All we need now is the action of our politicians.
“Many of them are on board. But there are some who still need convincing. Most notably Tony himself.
“This month, Prime Minister Tony Abbott will decide if his party can have a conscience vote on marriage equality.
“So to show that there are no hard feelings, and to prove just how serious you are, why not set a date for your big day or join a guest list, and we’ll send a save the date card to Tony on your behalf, inviting him to come along and support marriage equality.”
As of the time of publication, the InviteTony website had 73 registered same-sex weddings with 643 guests planning to attend.
There are reports that a cross-party marriage equality is expected to be introduced in federal parliament next week.
