President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has demanded same-sex couples conceive or face prison in a public address to supporters to launch his party’s campaign in the lead-up to the country’s general election later this month.
The often violently anti-gay Mugabe made the comment in a speech addressing United States President Barack Obama’s recent call for African countries to embrace LGBTI rights.
“I should like to shut them up in some room and see if they get pregnant; if they don’t then it’s jail because they have claimed they can have children. So, to that kind of rot, we say no, no, no, no!” Mugabe said.
He also demanded lesbians ‘prove their manhood’, saying some women in same-sex relationships claimed to be men taking another woman as their wife.
Mugabe has been widely criticised for his history of persecuting gay and lesbian people in Zimbabwe since his election to power in 1980, referring to them as “worse than dogs and pigs”.
