LGBTI youth camp launches crowdfunding campaign

CAMP Out, an organisation which takes a group of LGBTI young people on an inclusive away-from-home camp each year, is seeking community support as it aims to raise $15,000 through crowdfunding campaign.

Camp Out is designed to provide a safe space for gender and sexuality diverse young people between the ages of 13-17. Now in its sixth year, the camp offers workshops and discussions about identity and orientation alongside informal camp activities like games and movie nights.

The grassroots organisation seeks to create a supportive environment in which young people can share experiences and learn about coming out, homophobia, and transphobia.

We, the crew of Camp Out, needed a camp like this when we were teenagers, a place to talk openly and honestly about our emerging identities and to be around other LGBTIQ teens, without the fear of being bullied or discriminated against,” reads Camp Out’s Pozible page.

The organisation is staffed entirely by volunteers and relies on grants and donations from the community.

It estimates that the cost of this year’s camp will be $25,000.

Camp Out operates on a sliding scale fee system so that it remains accessible for all campers, and uses crowdfunding to ensure as many campers take part as possible.

The Pozible campaign will help fund food, transport, accommodation, and insurance in order to keep the cost of the camp as low as possible for young LGBTI participants.
