20 years since becoming legal

Twenty years ago today, on 8 June 1984, homosexual acts between adult males were decriminalised in New South Wales. This followed the passage of the Crimes (Amendment) Act by the NSW parliament on 22 May 1984.

Craig Johnston, co-founder of the Gay Rights Lobby Sydney and its chairperson between 1980-1982, wrote on the 10-year anniversary: “It was a real victory -“ a victory directly attributable to the efforts of NSW homosexuals, and mainly inner-Sydney gay men, over a number of years.”
