Aurora gets new chair

The Aurora Group introduced its new chair, Marcus Bourget, at Monday night’s ‘An Evening With Michael Kirby’ dinner at Hickson Road Bistro.

Bourget told the Star Observer that Aurora was sad to see outgoing chair David Moutou go although he would remain involved in a volunteer capacity.

“David has been a stalwart of Aurora for the last six years,” Bourget said. “What he brought to Aurora was a passion for what Aurora does, which is create events of celebration to support our community.”

Bourget said he hoped to bring the same passion to the role.

“I’m hoping to continue David’s good work,” Bourget said. “It’s a return for me to community work, and the board are a lovely group of people so I’m looking forward to harnessing those many talented people.”

At the dinner Kirby spoke of the plight of LGBTIs in Commonwealth countries that still criminalise homosexuality.

“We must lift our voices and not be silent until this horrible legacy of past ignorance is removed in every Commonwealth country,” Kirby said. “State sovereignty has to give way to fundamental human rights in gender, race and sexuality.”
