Aussies cast Queer Eyey over UK

The UK version of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy began airing in Britain last week with a distinctly Aussie bent.
Culture expert Jason Gardiner and interior designer Dane Bailey are both Australian, joining fashion guru Julian Bennett, grooming guy Tristan Eves and American foodie Peyton to make up the UK Fab 5.
According to his bio Gardiner, 32, trained at the Australian Ballet School and the Actors Centre in Sydney before winning a scholarship at the New York Performing Arts Centre. He has appeared on stage in Cats, West Side Story, Chicago and Oklahoma in Australia, London and the US and is also credited as dance captain/choreographer for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Bj?and Cher.
Bailey, 24, is said to have begun his design career in Australia in 1999. After studying Italian history of design in Florence he moved to London and enrolled at the Inchbald School of Design. In 2002 Bailey started his own design company and also has a bed linen label, Hurbie & Hurbie, which is about to launch its first range in London, Melbourne and Sydney this year.
So far TV critics haven’t been particularly kind to the UK Queer Eye. Keris Stainton, of Bella Online, said the new Fab 5 are even camper than the Americans but just aren’t funny, and it was so obvious they were trying to copy a formula that it just seemed forced.
This is the second attempt at creating a British version of the show. The first series was binned before it even finished filming, with US TV executives rumoured to have thought it looked too cheap and might hurt the Queer Eye brand. All the stars except fashion expert Bennett were replaced.
There is no word yet on when the Australian-made version of the series will be hitting our screens. A Network Ten spokesperson said producers were taking their time deciding on the cast and could not give a timeframe as to when filming will begin.
