Daffyd for Mardi Gras?

Daffyd for Mardi Gras?

One of comedy’s most internationally recognisable personalities could help launch the 2007 New Mardi Gras season, with rumours Little Britain star Matt Lucas is on the guest list for next month’s Flash Mob Launch.

Lucas, who plays Daffyd, the only gay in the village, in the popular British television series, is due in Sydney in early February for a tour with co-star David Walliams.

The latest mobile phone text message clue about the Flash Mob event suggests Lucas might find time to mingle with the Mardi Gras crowds.

Sorry 4 the kafuffle Bubbles but due to unforeseen circs we must move Flash Mob Launch to AFTERNOON of SAT 3RD FEB, the clue reads.

If U R a gay U want to be there!

Little Britain characters include the horrible middle-aged diva Bubbles Devere. Despite the whispers, New Mardi Gras chair Marcus Bourget was giving little away this week.

He told Sydney Star Observer the Flash Mob Launch had been moved from Friday 2 February to the following day because of the availability of talent.

Make sure you’re there on the Saturday. It’s going to be pretty amazing. But I’m not going to spoil the surprise.

A spokesperson for Michael Coppel Presents, the company bringing the Little Britain tour to Australia, said she was unaware of Lucas’s schedule outside the shows but did not deny a Mardi Gras appearance.

The Little Britain star would be a major coup for New Mardi Gras, which is hoping the Flash Mob event proves more successful than last year’s Sydney Opera House season opener. The ticketed 2006 event was lambasted for technical problems and slow bar service.

This year organisers have dispensed with the bar, food and bands. The free Flash Mob Launch will also be shorter than previous launches, lasting about an hour.

A clue released earlier this month told punters to wear your loudest and proudest shirt and get ready to make an entrance. New Mardi Gras will reveal more details, including the location, closer to the day.

Bourget said a few hundred people had registered for Flash Mob information so far.

Meantime, cabaret stars Caroline O’Connor and Michael Falzon and george singer Katie Noonan will be among the high-profile entertainers at New Mardi Gras’ Red Carpet Opening party on 2 February.

The Museum of Contemporary Art event is being styled as an upmarket alternative to the Flash Mob Launch, with part of the proceeds going to HIV/AIDS charities.

It’s a great event for people who are into musical theatre and light entertainment, Bourget said.
