Sydney Star Obsever spoke to New York-based singer Inaya Day about her upcoming visit to Sydney to perform at Big Queer Nation in June.

What can we expect at Big Queer Nation?

ID Relentless vocal energy. And no worries -“ I don’t lip-synch.

Do you perform at many gay parties?

ID Yes, I do. Here in the USA we have a whole gay circuit with its own mixes to the most popular dance tunes. My biggest following in the USA consists of the gay male circuit.

Which gay parties have you done?

ID The White Parties in New Orleans and Palm Springs, The Black and Blue Ball in Montr?, Canada, The Dinah Shore Party, also in Palm Springs, and most of the gay pride events.

What do you like about performing at gay events?

ID The energy and freedom of the crowd’s response and participation.

What have been some of the best parties you’ve ever played?

ID There have been so many. Two Tribes was great this year in Melbourne. I haven’t done a gay club in Australia yet so I’m really looking forward to seeing how it is in comparison to America.

Have you been to Sydney before?

ID Yes, quite a few times. I’m starting to feel that I need an apartment there.

What are you hoping to do while here?

ID Please the crowd. And I would love to go to a zoo or an aquarium. I love animals.

You’ve worked with a lot of big names in the music industry. Who have you enjoyed working with the most?

ID Well, as far as touring and performing goes, I would have to say MC Lyte and Bootsie Collins. As far as dance music goes,

I have the most fun on stage with Mr Timothy and the most fun in the studio with DJ Mike Cruz, with whom I’ve had two Number One hits on the Billboard dance charts.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

ID I’m working on a new song with DJ Mike Cruz. It’s called Spin Me. I think you guys will dig it.
