DISTANT LAND [John Rutter] This new collection of orchestral music from English composer John Rutter is a potpourri of gorgeousness. Rutter, a composer primarily noted for his choral compositions, has often found his albums effortlessly climbing to the top of the classic charts. It is fulsome music that is not afraid to give priority to beautiful melody. For some it will be dismissed as over-ripe and while I also tend towards this opinion it definitely has enough to tempt even the cynic. It has moments of rousing splendour, others of wit, and it is never less than striking. But the Beatles didn’t need the prettification he gives them in the Beatles Concerto.
