DJ Ben Drayton

DJ Ben Drayton gives us his top five tracks at the moment. He’s currently playing on Thursdays at the Newtown Hotel and on Saturday at what he calls the increasingly clothing optional night Hog at Phoenix. He’s also doing Field Day on New Year’s Day and Bad Dog on 22 January.

NO WOW

The Kills

A few quotes from this track: You’re gonna have to step over my dead body, before you walk out that door. You charmed me with your magic, landed looking tragic. You’re make-believing-on in your mind. Your eyes are holy rollin’, looking, beating, knocking. The ceiling gets closer to you all the time. Drip, drip, drip, drip, drip kinda like the loose end of the night. It’s like they wrote this at Phoenix one sweaty night. They’re playing at @Newtown soon. It’s a must.

WET & WILD

Kim Moyes

Kind of like Mylo’s Drop The Pressure but much, much better. Kim is from The Presets and this track is from the brand new Club Kooky album (on which Seymour Butz and I did a remix of Paul Mac’s Panic Room). So local kids do good all round then.

DARE (DFA Remix)

Gorillaz

The DFA guys, a gang who work with, or are in, bands such as LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture and The Juan McLean, have turned in a hugely tripped-out, vinyl-only mix of this killer track. A tough funk feel from the get-go mutates into an acid-fried freakout in its last half. Norman Whitfield for the 21st century.

THE LAST STAND

Red Planet

A rare release from this mysterious Detroit-based outfit. No cover art, no photos or interviews with the band. Just a killer minimal-dub hypnotic masterpiece. Techno with soul.

BASS TURKEY

Love Tattoo

From local DJ legend Steve Allkins’s upcoming second album. Massive percussion and bowel-loosening bass lines have long been Steve’s trademark and this track has been kicking butts all over Phoenix lately. Look for this album around February or thereabouts.
