Doing health, the diverse way

The federal Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mark Butler will launch Health In Difference, Australia’s largest conference devoted to GLBTI health.

‘Doing diversity’ is the theme for the seventh Health in Difference conference, to be held in Sydney, starting on Thursday and running till Saturday, May 1.

Bringing together experts from a range of health areas — mental and sexual health, alcohol and drug abuse specialists, Indigenous workers and trans and intersex advocates — the ambition is to provide a holistic look at LGBTI communities and the impact social exclusion has on them.

Presented for the first time by the newly-formed National LGBT Health Alliance, there are hopes the conference will increase awareness of GLBTI health issues in the mainstream.

“Australians pride themselves on giving everyone a fair go and it’s important that Government and mainstream services work with the LGBTI sector to ensure they are socially inclusive,” Alliance executive director Gabi Rosenstreich said.

“This year’s conference is all about how individuals and organisations can better equip themselves for ‘doing diversity’, to respond to the needs of LGBTI people.”

Online registration is now closed, but it is possible to register on the day.
