Two Madrid region men who have been partners for more than 30 years became Spain’s first gay couple to legally marry on Monday.

Carlos Baturin and Emilio Menendez exchanged vows in Tres Cantos, a town near Madrid, becoming the first people to wed under same-sex marriage laws that took effect earlier this month, Associated Press reported.

“We’re normal people who love each other and want to be happy, Menendez said after the ceremony.
