Taking a bold step, an Indian film director has made a new Bollywood film featuring a gay love story and kiss.

Gay characters have shown up in Bollywood films before, however, they rarely receive the treatment of protagonist or the films have been released outside the mainstream.

Dunno Y … Na Jaane Kyun — roughly translated as Don’t Know Why — is the story of a male model who goes to Mumbai to make his fortune, and falls in love with a man.

The film’s advertising doesn’t shy away from its themes with two men tenderly embracing, naked from the waist up.

According to a BBC report, the film’s director, Sanjay Sharma, said he believes the film will pass India’s tough censors.

The director said he was inspired to make the film because of the usual unflattering depiction of gay characters in Bollywood films.

Although homosexuality was decriminalised in India last year, gay and lesbian culture is still not completely accepted in the mainstream.
