Going for gold again

Going for gold again

Gay and lesbian community groups are being asked to think of ways to put the glitz and glamour back into Oxford St.
A group of community leaders met on Monday night to discuss the future of the once-Golden Mile and ways it could be restamped a gay and lesbian village.
Representatives from ACON, the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, Arq, the Imperial Hotel, Dykes on Bikes, SSO, SX, Timeout and website Same Same spent almost three hours looking at the problems facing the strip and the ways the gay community could get involved and help make a difference.
The group is now seeking expressions of interest from community groups keen to play a pivotal role in the project by hosting an event on the strip in 2008.
Ideas can be as broad-ranging as an art exhibition, car show, volunteers day or dance party.
It is hoped enough ideas will be put forward to plan a year of gay and lesbian events to make the community visible on the strip once again.
Ideas should be emailed to the contact below by 16 November and include the nominator’s name and contact details.
