Guerilla rainbows pop up

The removal of the Taylor Square rainbow crossing has triggered a wave of ‘do-it-yourself’ chalk rainbows on roads and laneways around Oxford St and Sydney’s Inner West.
Organised by local community activist James Brechney after the removal of the pedestrian crossing on Wednesday night, the rainbows have been popping up on streets in Newtown, Marrickville, Paddington and Surry Hills, with people uploading photos of their efforts online.
Brechney said he was “blown away” with the response the project had gotten from the community.
“I was really sad to see it go. The rainbow crossing was a lovely thing, and we wanted to commemorate its short-lived existence,” Brechney said.
“It’s activism with a bit of panache. We’re looking at doing a nice big one on Monday, so stay tuned.”
Independent radio station FBi and the Newtown Hotel have also started chalking their own crossings in support.
