Helpmann awards

The Helpmanns were dished out again this week with a bevy of community notables taking out gongs. The musical Cabaret was one of the big winners taking out the best musical award and its star Toby Allen taking out the prize for best actor in a musical. The SMH described his role as turning the once sophisticated character of the Emcee into a primal, lecherous, scene-stealing sex-pot. And he certainly stole the limelight at these awards from his more high-profile female co-stars Tina Arena and Lisa McCune whose names were nowhere to be found in the prize list. However, the stunning Nadine Garner pipped fellow Cabaret star Judi Connelli to take out the best-supporting category. Other winners included Neil Armfield for his production of The Marriage Of Figaro and Graeme Murphy for his Swan Lake. The most heartfelt award of the evening went to the late Russell Page of the Bangarra dance company for his lead role in Walkabout. Page shocked friends and fans when he took his own life last year the week after the acclaimed show finished its Sydney run.
