Hockey’s youth back marriage
A survey of young people in the electorate of North Sydney has shown overwhelming support for marriage equality.
Earlier this year federal North Sydney Liberal MP Joe Hockey invited younger voters in his electorate to share their views on a range of local and national issues.
More than 400 people aged 18 to 21 took part in the survey, which Hockey said helped him better understand the priorities of younger voters in the electorate.
78 percent of respondents supported legal recognition of same-sex marriages.
In comparison only 51 percent supported Australia becoming a republic and only 33 percent supported tighter controls on bars and clubs.
The results of the survey were published in Hockey’s most recent Focus North newsletter to residents in the electorate.
Hockey, who is due to report back on his consultation with constituents on the issue of same-sex marriage on August 24, published the result without comment.
In April this year the Wentworth Liberal MP Malcolm Turnbull revealed that a survey he carried out found 72 percent of voters in his electorate supported same-sex marriage.
The good thing about this is that the Libs tend to allow more conscience votes than Labor, which has binding policies. Not that the mad monk would allow one on this issue however. Still, Hockey’s a small L liberal, could be hope in it!
Great, but why does Joe still not support equality before the law, why does he still not support including us in the Federal Equal Opportunity Act?
When the thug Tony Abbott last had power as the failed Health Minister, he demanded a Marriage Certificate from my partner and I, when my partner had to work in a remote country hospital as a Doctor. The Award was Federal. Heterosexual Doctors could get the accommodation, but he put a ban in place for gay and Lesbian doctors, and expected us to pay for hotels. This was covered by the Melbourne Star Observer at the time, and only ended with the help of the Victorian Labor MP Bronwyn Pike who stood up to the thug, along with some of the Green Senators.
Australia will be ripped apart if Tony Abbott gets power. He even wanted to shut down gay venues, and started doing epidemiology studies on HIV, trying to track the “Hot Spots” with a view to shutting them down. This was in the dying days of his government.
