Indulge yourself

This Sunday sees the upstairs nightclub of the Midnight Shift hosting the sixth Indulgence, a leather and denim party that has gathered a loyal following in the last year. Originally held as a recovery for the 2002 Inquisition, the inaugural event was such a success that it got promotions manager Daniel Floyd thinking about a gap that needed to be filled.

We really thought, well, if we can do a party that’s targeted towards a certain group, which we know are a very loyal group and really know how to have a good party, we would have quite a successful night, Floyd said.

We thought there really is only one big leather event throughout the year and there obviously is a demand for it so we sort of invented Indulgence. We decided to put them on long weekends when there’s other sorts of big parties happening, but there’s really nothing for the leather and denim scene.

Floyd is keenly aware that simply putting on a party aimed at the leather scene is not enough to guarantee a crowd.

Obviously the integrity of an event such as Indulgence needs to be perfect -¦ We do consult with Sydney Leather Men [SLM] or Sydney Leather Pride [SLP] on entertainment for the evening, on the look and feel of the club. We don’t want to put on an event that doesn’t hit the nail on the head, Floyd said. He added that the venue itself does have a certain unique ambience, with quite a masculine, industrial look that doesn’t require much in the way of decorations.

Given the short period since the last Indulgence party, this Sunday’s event has been produced solely by the Midnight Shift, with collaborative parties with SLM and SLP planned for the rest of 2003. Floyd’s confident that the event won’t disappoint punters up for a hot night.

We usually do clever things with the lights to create some additional nooks and crannies that people can hide themselves in throughout the evening. And really let the music do the talking, smiled Floyd. We’ve brought a couple of new DJs on this time -“ Garry Tee’s doing his first Indulgence party, Rob Davis returns, I think he’s played at the last two, and Mike Kelly, who’s played at all of the Indulgence parties.

Indulgence is held this Sunday 26 January at themidnightshift club, 85 Oxford Street, from 10pm. Tickets are $20 presale from The Midnight Shift video bar or $25 at the door.
