Israel’s supreme court has told the government to recognise same-sex marriages performed overseas, in a ruling that has added to ongoing animosity between gay activists and conservative religious groups.

The supreme court issued the ruling on Tuesday, Associated Press reported, about a week after a controversial gay pride parade was scaled down amid criticism from religious leaders.

Activists welcomed this week’s ruling but said it was only the beginning of the battle because of the continuing opposition to gay rights.
