Lesbian health gets a new focus

In an Australian first, ACON will launch its comprehensive lesbian health strategy at a fundraising event on October 8 at the Newtown Dendy.

Held in conjunction with Queer Screen, In The Pink will combine a movie date with a public lecture in an all-encompassing evening which will raise funds for the lesbian health project.

ACON CEO Stevie Clayton and Dr Kerryn Phelps will both speak before guests are treated to a screening of The Itty Bitty Titty Committee and cocktails at The Bank.

ACON community development unit manager Michelle Sparks said In The Pink would be a fun night for an important cause.

ACON was for a long time perceived as a predominantly male service but we’ve put a lot of time and effort into assessing what the lesbian community’s health needs are, and we’re very excited about launching it, Sparks said.

The main issue with lesbian health has always been our invisibility in the health system, in spite of the fact that it is a community which has several risk factors -” hopefully this will do something to combat that invisibility.

info: In The Pink will be held on October 8, Dendy Newtown from 6.30pm. Tickets: $20. Bookings: www.boxoffice.mca-tix.com.au or 8594 9010.
